About the Group
Nick Land, a chartered accountant, retired as Chairman of Ernst & Young LLP in 2006 after a career spanning 36 years with the firm. He became an audit partner in 1978 and held a number of management roles before becoming Managing Partner in 1992. He was elected chairman in 1995 and joined the Global Executive Board at that time. He was also Managing Partner of Ernst & Young’s Northern European, India, the Middle East and Africa Region.
Nick is a non-executive director and chairs the audit and risk committees of Vodafone Group plc, Alliance Boots GmbH, BBA Aviation plc and the Ashmore Group plc. He is also the senior independent director for BBA Aviation plc and Ashmore Group plc. He is an advisor to the boards of Alsbridge plc and Dentons UKMEA LLP. He is also chairman of the board of trustees of both the Vodafone Group Foundation and Farnham Castle and is a member of the National Gallery’s Finance and Audit Committees.
Nick is a director of the Financial Reporting Council and member of the FRC’s Codes and Standards Committee.
Jeannie Drake has extensive experience in the pensions and finance sectors. She is a non-executive board member of the Pension Protection Fund and Personal Accounts Delivery Authority and, was a member of the Pensions Commission under the chairmanship of Lord Turner. She is a trustee of both the 02 and Alliance and Leicester Pension Schemes.
Jeannie is also a lay member of the Employment Appeal Tribunal and on the board of the Sector Skills Development Agency and is a Commissioner of the Equality and Human Rights Commission. She will retire shortly from her position as a Deputy General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union representing members in the Telecoms and Financial sectors. She was TUC President in 2005.
Glyn Parry is Director Group Financial Control at BT Group responsible for the group’s external financial reporting and associated internal control, compliance and governance matters and the group’s pension obligations including the associated financing, investment, risk management and administration activities. Glyn is also a director of British Telecommunications plc, the main UK trading entity of BT Group.
Glyn is a Chartered Accountant who joined BT in 2002, prior to which he worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers both in the UK and overseas.
Private equity representatives
Ralf Gruss is Chief Operating Officer at Apax Partners. He is a former member of the Financial & Business Services team and is based in London. Ralf’s deal experience includes Kabel Deutschland, LR Health and Beauty Systems and IFCO Systems.
Prior to joining Apax, Ralf was a consultant with Arthur D. Little International Inc, where he specialised in advising clients in the Financial Services sector. Ralf holds a diploma in industrial engineering and business administration from the Technical University in Karlsruhe. He also studied at the University of Massachusetts and the London School of Economics.
Gerry Murphy is a Senior Managing Director in the Corporate Private Equity group and Chairman of The Blackstone Group
International Partners LLP, the firm’s principal European regulated entity. Based in London, his primary focus is supporting the firm’s activities across Europe and Asia and he serves as a director of United Biscuits, Kloeckner Pentaplast, Merlin Entertainments Group and Michaels Stores. He is a non-executive director of British American Tobacco plc.
Before joining Blackstone in 2008, Dr. Murphy spent five years as CEO of Kingfisher plc, a FTSE 100 company and the leading home improvement retailer in Europe and Asia. He has also served as CEO of Carlton Communications plc, Exel plc and Greencore Group plc. Earlier in his career, he held senior operating and corporate positions with Grand Metropolitan plc (now Diageo plc) in Ireland, the UK and the USA. He has served on the boards of Reckitt Benckiser Group plc, Abbey National plc and Novar plc and on the UK government’s Asia Task Force.
